Your Thursday Connection to Empowerment & a bit of Fun!

đIs Your Brain is Begging for play?
Hereâs a scienceâbacked truth with a touch of magic: your brain needs fun. Itâs not just a luxuryâit fuels creativity, reduces stress, and sparks new ideas. Sometimes, all it takes is a bottle of bubbles or a childhood memory to remind you what joy really feels like. This week, letâs make space for that wonder again.
A few weeks ago, I walked past a shelf of bubbles at Walmart. You know the kindâbright bottle, twist-off wand, childhood magic in liquid form. I paused. Reached out. And then I kept walking, thinking, âThatâs silly. I donât have anyone to blow bubbles with.â
But later, I wished Iâd bought them. Because bubblesâyes, bubblesâare one of my âfun magnets.â They instantly bring back summer memories of Atlantic waves and sticky snow cone fingers. They make me smile. And according to science, thatâs no small thing.
Big takeaway:
đ Fun isnât frivolous. Itâs fuel.
Turns out, having fun does more than make you feel good. According to research shared in Forbes and NPR, joy-filled moments reduce stress, boost creative thinking, and help your brain reset. Fun improves wellâbeing, productivity, and connectionâand yet most adults barely make time for it.
Especially when working remotely. Itâs easy to let fun slide off the schedule. Without co-workers laughing near the break room or signaling the end of the day as they head out the door, you might find yourself stuck in your chair from after lunch until late in the evening. Thatâs not sustainable.
So letâs change that, starting today. Here's how:
đĄ 5 Ways to Reclaim Fun (Even During Work)
- Identify Your âFun Magnetsâ â Think of 3â4 moments youâve felt truly joyful. What were you doing? Who were you with? Those threads are your personal joy triggers.
- Schedule Fun Like Itâs a Meeting â Put it on your calendar. Even 10 minutes helps. Mike Rucker calls this "creating more opportunities for spontaneity."
- Give Yourself Permission â Fun isnât selfishâitâs brain fuel. Let go of the guilt and embrace the good it does.
- Make It Easy & Accessible â Have a coloring book, bubbles, music, whatever sparks joy nearby.
- Connect with People Who Spark Joy â Call, text, or facetime with someone who makes you laugh.
Fun is personal. Whether itâs solo, social, active or relaxing, what matters is that your fun brings you joy!
Soâwhat are your âfun magnetsâ? This week, rediscover them. Schedule them. Let yourself play again.
Youâre not too old. Itâs not too late. And you are definitely worth it.
